Lisa at Ausmusic Headquarters |
Ausmusic’s own sporting legend at the age of 21 is Lisa Szatsznajder. This year Lisa was unfortunate in narrowly missing selection for the Beijing Olympics. But in the sport of Rowing age is no limit, and for Lisa there is plenty more opportunities for selection. |
At the selection trials held on Sydney’s Nepean River in February, Lisa and double sculls partner Sally Robbins finished last in the final heat, Robbins who has brought the sport to the headlines, was going for her second Olympics and also missed out on Beijing. There was however success at the trials for Lisa, coming in first with Tasmanian Kerry Hore in one of the first 2000m events.
But the determination in Lisa has not floundered. In July she will be going for Gold in the under 23 World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany. This time Lisa will be rowing in the women’s quad scull, the same event Lisa won a silver medal for at last years World Championship, coming second to the American team by only .79 seconds. This year the team includes Emma McCarthy who was also in the team last year, plus new additions Laura Osti and Kim Brown.
Last week Lisa checked in with Ausmusic to update us on her training.
“We have a team that is really fast and fit, so we are hoping to go one better than last years World Champs. The crew will be coached by Brenton Terrell, and will be training in Melbourne on the Yarra; there will be 2 solid months of training before we go overseas in July.”
We wish the team the best of luck overseas and look forward to hearing some top results.

Professional Development Day at the Ausmusic Auditorium |
On Wednesday 5th Dec Ausmusic held the annual VET Music Teachers Professional Development Day at our facility 55 Brady St South Melbourne. 60 VET Music Teachers from across Victoria spent the day sharing ideas and discussing developments within the music industry. We had guests including Robert Styles from AVID Australia and Charles Tetaz from Digidesign as well as performances from Lia Avene and Novacane. Ausmusic would like to thank all those teachers that attended and hope to see everyone again in 2008. Click here to see the photo album of the event. |
Lia Avene at the Ausmusic Auditorium |
Born in the Pacific Islands, singer/ songwriter Lia Avene began performing in primary school, and has since mounted her solo career on her keen talent for writing and performing her own material. Lia is an organic, vibrant and outgoing artist blending an angelic voice and soulful guitar accompaniment.
Lia's style is a fusion of folk and soul with a hint of jazz. Her eclectic style stems from the various bands and groups she has worked with. |
From a 30 piece swing band to a 7 piece Celtic rock ensemble to an Indonesian pop group,
Lia has certainly experimented with many different styles of music. As for experience, Lia has made many appearances at the Queenscliff Music Festival, Apollo Bay Music Festival and many other venues, festivals and functions in and around Melbourne.
She has also toured Queensland and Indonesia with different groups. A winner of the Young Performers Competition as well as the Young Songwriters Competition at the Apollo Bay Music Festival she has proven a talent and understanding of music beyond her years.
In 2006, Lia moved to London to record her debut album with independent record label Eskay Records. Lia returned to Melbourne in 2007 and her performance at Ausmusic moved all those in attendance. For more details check out myspace.com/liaavene.
Novacne performing at Club Red |
Novacane was formed a long time ago by Brenton Mortelliti (Guitars/Vocals) and Jack Nicol (Drums). They have played with various bass players and had a few vocalists but the line up now is settled and performing regularly. With influences such as Muse, Nirvana and Radiohead, Novacane have an alternative sound of funky breakdowns and massive riffery. The addition of Rafik Zeffane on bass earlier this year has really defined the bands sound and added some funk. Ausmusic would like to thank the band for their performance and look forward to working with the guys more in the future. Check Out myspace.com/novacanetheband for more details. |
